After teaming up with Nike on a pack of Dunk Highs in 2022, Chinese streetwear brand SoulGoods is now linking up with Jordan Brand on an Air Ship collaboration.
The Air Ship is known as being the shoe that Michael Jordan wore in the NBA at the beginning of his rookie year before lacing up his own signature Air Jordan 1. This ’80s silhouette had been tucked away for decades, finally revived in 2020 as part of the “New Beginnings” pack for All-Star Weekend. Since then, Jordan Brand has been unleashing a multitude of colorways and collabs on the Air Ship, and it’s now SoulGoods turn to remix the model.
The SoulGoods Air Ship stands out from previous Air Ships as it features non-traditional color blocking and materials. Short-haired Baroque Brown suede is applied to the majority of the paneling, broken up by a grey hairy suede overlay on the toe. Brown mesh is then added to the toe box for an added layer of depth.
The Beijing-based label have added the number 5 on the heel as a tribute to the 1957 film Woman Basketball Player No. 5. This was the first Chinese sports movie filmed in color after the formation of the People’s Republic of China. The film captures the long-standing relationship between China and basketball and was the blueprint for the sports movie genre in China.
SoulGoods have also added their tiger head logo to the shoe, found debossed on the ankle collar, while on the sockliner are the words “Prove Yourself,” a message to inspire the younger generation and realize their dreams.
