Following an early look, Beijing-based SoulGoods and Nike officially unveil their upcoming collaboration on the Dunk High. This project aims to highlight the growth of sneaker culture and communities in Greater China through three different colorways, each representing a different decade: the ’80s, ’90s and 2000s.
Each shoe in the pack is an expression of SoulGoods’ roots in basketball, music, style, and art. The “’80s” colorway references styles found in classic basketball films and local Beijing street ball courts in the 1980s. Dressed in a black and grey color scheme, the shoe pulls some inspiration from the Nike Mac Attack, a tennis sneaker originally created for John McEnroe in 1984. Some details pulled from the Mac Attack include the five circular perforations lined up on the lateral toe, the checkered tongue tag, and the mesh paneling on the quarters. The “SOULGOODS” branding across the heels is reminiscent of the branding on the Nike Terminator, while the Nike branding embroidered on the wings may be a callback to branding founding on models such as the 1986 Nike Team Convention.
The “’90s” colorway represents the rock and hip-hop enthusiasts of the club scene during the decade. The olive green upper gives a military-inspired look, while additional details include “Soul Tiger” icons on the heels, reflective silver trim on the Swooshes, and black hits on the eyelet overlays, tongues, and sole units.
Rounding out the collection is the “2000s” colorway, which nods to longtime sneaker collectors and artists who witnessed the previous decades. It features a pink and navy color scheme with graphics throughout, including the phrases “Never Change” and “Always Change” on the heels. All three shoes feature the SoulGoods motto on the sockliner: “From Beijing to the World.”
The SoulGoods x Nike Dunk High collection will release throughout November and December on SNKRS, the SoulGoods website, and select retailers. Check out all three pairs below.
