Nike has dug deep into its archive to bring back an ultra-rare sneaker from back in the day, the PHANTACi x Nike Air Max 1 “Grand Piano.”
This coveted Air Max originally released in 2009 in partnership with PHANTACi, the Taiwanese sneaker boutique and streetwear brand founded by the “King of Mandopop” Jay Chou and his friend and business partner Ric Chiang. The release was exclusive to PHANTACI locations and is said to have been limited to only 400 pairs (however, we couldn’t verify this rumor).
The obscure grail is now back in 2024 in celebration of PHANTACi’s 18th birthday. Like the OG version, the 2024 retro features a black and white piano key-inspired patent leather upper with gold patent leather on the heel and metallic gold top eyelets. A velvety pink sockliner adds a luxe touch, matching with the pink rubber outsole. Piano key graphics are printed onto the insoles.
PHANTACi has planned a special piano-themed exhibition for this release. An immersive experience comprised of four “movements” — Prelude, Air Rhapsody, Interlude, and Finale — will take place at a venue in Hangzhou, China, open from April 19th to April 22nd. Visitors will be able to purchase the “Grand Piano” Air Max 1 at the exhibition as well as other special products such as apparel and PHANTACi x Nike basketballs.
PHANTACi and Nike have also created an exclusive Friends & Family version of the “Piano” Air Max 1 that features smooth leather instead of patent leather and an inverted color scheme. This pair also features “18” on the tongue tags instead of the standard Nike branding to commemorate the 18th anniversary of PHANTACi.
Following the exhibition, pairs of the PHANTACi x Nike Air Max 1 will be made available at PHANTACi locations on April 27th and on May 5th on SNKRS in select regions (possibly only in Asia). Check out the official images below.
