The ASICS GEL-KAYANO 14 has been getting tons of love lately. Collaborations with the likes of JJJJound and Ice Studios, as well as co-signs from celebs like Hailey Bieber, have made the silhouette one of the hottest sneakers on the market. ASICS is now adding a new member to the KAYANO series, the GEL-KAYANO LEGACY, in celebration of the franchise’s 30th anniversary.
In 1993, ASICS designer Toshikazu Kayano was looking to create a new sneaker for runners that also had enough lateral support for it to be used in the gym. Kayano looked to nature for inspiration and found it in the stag beetle, as he noticed it’s hard exoskeleton served as protection while still allowing the beetle to be quick and light. Kayano applied this thinking to his shoe design and voila, the GEL-KAYANO was born.
Since then, new iterations of the GEL-KAYANO have been released annually, each one striving to be more technically advanced than the one before it. Three decades in, there are now thirty entries in GEL-KAYANO series, all building off of Kayano-san’s original design from 1993.
Fast forward to 2023, ASICS is now launching the GEL-KAYANO LEGACY. The design team took the best elements from various KAYANO eras and applied them to the LEGACY, starting with the tooling of the GEL-KAYANO 14 as a base. The LEGACY is offered in two colorways, a monochromatic version in classic “Pure Silver” and a multicolored version that highlights the different sources of the LEGACY’s design.
The ASICS GEL-KAYANO LEGACY launches on September 15th on the ASICS website and at select retailers across the U.S. and Europe. Check out both launch colorways below.
