Original Story (01/12/24): The early 2010s was a special era for Nike Basketball. Rapid innovation in performance-based technology was taking place at Beaverton, leading to the creation of groundbreaking silhouettes such as the LeBron 8 and Kobe 5. Kevin Durant’s signature KD sneakers were also picking up steam, and the launch of the KD 4 in 2011 took things to the line to next level. Not only did it feature enhanced tech specs with its new Adaptive Fit system, Hyperfuse construction, and Zoom Air cushioning, but the shoe came in an assortment of beloved colorways. In 2024, Nike is bringing back a few of these fan-favorite colorways, including the iconic “Weatherman.”
The “Weatherman” KD 4 is a nod to how Durant “makes it rain” on the court, but was also inspired by how Durant wanted to be a weatherman when he was a kid. The shoe features a meteorological theme, dressed primarily in green to represent the green screen used by meteorologists on TV. Hits of yellow, red, and orange are incorporated into the doppler radar-like pattern found around the heel and tongue. These colors also appears on the bottom of the clear outsole, the design created using thermo-mapping scans of Durant’s actual footprint. The doppler pattern also appears on the forefoot strap in a more muted black color scheme. From first look images, we can see that the 2024 retro is pretty much identical to the original 2011 release, though the Phylon midsole may have been tweaked to provide more cushioning like Nike did with the retro of the KD 3.
The Nike KD 4 “Weatherman” makes its return this summer, releasing on Nike.com and at select retailers. Grab a first look at the 2024 retro below.
