New Balance 2002R “Refined Future” Fall 2023 Lineup

New Balance re-introduced its 2002 silhouette in 2020 to much fanfare, though it wasn’t until NB footwear designer Yue Wu added his “Refined Future” concept to them that the 2002R really popped off. By adding layers of jagged-edged suede, Yue Wu gave the 2002R an “eroded” look, inspired by the idea of how New Balance shoes are such great quality that they could last a lifetime.

These styles first hit the market in 2021 and received the nickname “Protection Pack” after retailers started calling them that online. While that is now the more common name, we will continue to call them “Refined Future” out of respect for Yue Wu’s original vision. Following its successful launch, the “Refined Future” series quickly expanded with new colorways of the 2002R and onto other silhouettes.

For Fall 2023, New Balance adds four more “Refined Future” 2002Rs to their catalog. Apart from new colorways (Sandstone, Dark Moss, Eclipse, and High Desert), this season’s offering also has some technical upgrades. The usual mesh base has been replaced with nylon ripstop, while leather has replaced some of the suede overlays. The traditional laces have also been replaced with a more utilitarian lace toggle system.

The New Balance 2002R “Refined Future” Fall 2023 lineup saw an early release last week via Concepts and has almost entirely sold out. Luckily, there is a wider global release on Sunday, October 1st on the New Balance website and at select retailers such as DTLR. Check out all four colorways below.
