Since its founding in 2012, Shenzhen-based fashion boutique COSTS has offered apparel catered for the youth living in the southern coast of China. Through its partnership with ASICS, COSTS has been able to highlight Guangdong culture through footwear on a global level.
Earlier this year, COSTS and ASICS came together on a “Cane Vine” GEL-LYTE III inspired by lychee vines, which represent growth and pay homage to the vibrancy of life. Now, COSTS and ASICS are back with a new sneaker collaboration, this time on the GT-2160 silhouette.
This GT-2160 draws inspiration from the shao ji, a bamboo-knitted basket-like tool used to wash rice that plays an important role in the lives of locals on China’s southern coast. Uppers of the shoe are constructed from a breathable mesh with a texture and beige hue similar to knitted shao ji. Pops of indigo blue, a signature color of both ASICS and COSTS, are found on the ASICS side stripes, heel pulls, midsole, and outsole. “SHAO JI” and the Chinese characters “筲箕” are found on the lace stays, while the insoles are printed with various types of shao ji. Co-branding is found on the heel panels, laces, and special packaging.
