A spiritual successor to last year’s netted GEL-KAYANO 26 and a companion to the recent GEL-KAYANO-27 LTX, ASICS and legendary British fashion designer Vivienne Westwood are continuing their partnership with a collaborative GEL-KAYANO 27 DE.
The GEL-KAYANO 27 is one of ASICS’ flagship running shoes and traditionally features a knit upper, a DYNAMIC DUOMAX support system, and SPACE TRUSSTIC technology to reduce the model’s weight and provide smooth heel-to-toe transition. Westwood has taken the performance running DNA of the shoe and reconfigured it into something new with a deliberately “deconstructed” look. Echoing the duo’s GEL-KAYANO 26, thick netting peeks out from the shoe’s toeguard and midsole as though last year’s model is emerging from captivity. While the shoe’s original silhouette remains relatively intact, Vivienne Westwood’s signature Saturn globus cruciger logo graces the borders of ASICS’ sidewall stripes atop a reworked ripstop upper.
The shoe comes as part of a recent reignition of ASICS’ journey into higher fashion. The Japanese running brand has recently released partnerships with CDG SHIRT, Kiko Kostadinov, Slam Jam, and many other widely-acclaimed designers and fashion houses in recent memory, marking them as one of the hottest sneaker brands within the past few years.
The Vivienne Westwood x ASICS GEL-KAYANO 27 DE releases in two colorways on May 1st via the ASICS website, the Vivienne Westwood webstore, and select retailers. A new campaign video by director and choreographer Holly Blakey will premiere coinciding with the launch, a sequel to her dance film for the GEL-KAYANO 27 LTX. Both can be viewed below.
