Austin’s No-Comply skate shop has held down its local skate community for the past 15 years. To celebrate its 15th anniversary, No-Comply is reuniting with Vans and the estate of fellow Austin native Daniel Johnston for a third collaborative collection featuring the late artist’s work. The first collection launched in 2019 when Johnston was still alive, followed by a second collection in 2020.
Daniel Johnston was best known as a leading figure in the indie music scene. However, he was also a prolific visual artist as well. Inspired by comic books, he illustrated wondrous and fantastical characters that would evolve with him throughout his life, most notably “The Beast,” a multi-headed creature, “Jeremiah the Innocent,” a symbol of pure innocence, and “Vile Corrupt,” Jeremiah’s multi-eyeballed nemesis.
This third Daniel Johnston x Vans x No-Comply collection features the late artist’s work across a range of silhouettes including the Half Cab, Grosso Mid, and Slip-On Trek. The collection also features apparel and accessories, including a tee, polo, hat, and a side bag. The Grosso Mid and Slip-on Trek will be sold exclusively through No-Comply Skateshop.
Vans and No-Comply are funded the opening of The Austin Contemporary’s “I Live My Broken Dreams,” Daniel Johnston’s first-ever museum exhibition, currently on display through March 20th. Pieces from the collection will be available at a special event held at The Austin Contemporary on March 19th, which includes a viewing of a Daniel Johnston mural on the museum’s outside wall, followed by a walk through of the full exhibition.
The Vans x No-Comply x Daniel Johnston collection will be available via No-Comply on March 20th. Additional skate shops will release the collection on March 24th. Visit The Drop List for a full list of retailers. A portion of the footwear sales will be donated to the Daniel Johnston’s ‘Hi, How Are You Project’ and its mission to encourage open conversations around mental health.
