Following the release of its Latino Heritage month collection, Nike is now dropping a new “Somos Familia” collection in celebration of the Mexican holiday Día de los Muertos, aka Day of the Dead.
Similar to last year’s collection, the “Somos Familia” (We Are Family) collection celebrates the everlasting memories and bonds of family members through one of Mexico’s most recognized traditions. Including both footwear and apparel, the designs, colors, and textures are inspired by the four main “ofrendas” (offerings) placed in home altars during the holiday: the Cempasúchil flower, candles, pan de muertos (bread of the dead), and salt and water.
Each of these ofrendas are used as inspiration for the designs of the four footwear styles. The Women’s Air Max 1 “Somos Familia” takes after the Cempasúchil flower with its orange and yellow upper, embossed graphics, and glow-in-the-dark outsole.
The collection’s Air Jordan 1 Zoom CMFT features a neutral suede upper inspired by candles placed at ofrendas, which represent hope and faith, and illuminate the path of souls back home. The Cempasúchil flower graphics seen on the Air Max 1 also appear on this style.
The embroidered elements on the Air Force 1 reference the traditional bread of the dead that is baked during the holiday, whose circular shape symbolizes the inevitable cycle of life and death.
Lastly, the split design of the Nike Dunk High represents the salt and water that are placed together at the altar. According to tradition, salt is a symbol of purification and prevents the body from losing its essence during travel, while the water quenches the thirst of the soul during its journey.
The collection is rounded out by an apparel range that includes a work jacket in black and rattan colorways, a women’s oversized half-zip cropped sweater offered in black and in orange, and a t-shirt in three colorways: black, white, and orange.
The Nike “Somos Familia” collection kicks off with the release of the Air Max 1 on October 18th on SNKRS in Mexico. The entire collection will launch globally on Nike.com, the Nike app, and select retailers on October 22nd.
