ASICS has unveiled a new eco-friendly version of its popular GEL-LYTE III model that emits only 1.95kg CO2e per pair, making it the lowest carbon footprint ever achieved in a commercial sneaker.
The GEL-LYTE III CM 1.95 is a result of over ten years of research and development by ASICS, beginning in 2010 when the sportswear brand partnered with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to find a better way to accurately measure the CO2e impact across the entire life cycle of a product.
To achieve this ultra low carbon footprint, ASICS applied their findings and made hundreds of incremental changes across four key stages of the product life cycle: Materials & Manufacturing, Transportation, Use, and End-Of-Life. All together, these small improvements combined to make a big impact, achieving new levels of sustainability without compromising on quality.
Among the sneaker’s innovations is the use of a new carbon negative foam on the midsole and sockliner. This foam is made using a combination of several raw materials including SEPTON™ BIO-series, a bio-based polymer derived partially from sugarcane. This marks the first time this material is used in a shoe midsole. Recycled and solution dyed polyester is incorporated in the main upper and sockliner mesh, reflecting ASICS’ target of sourcing 100% of its polyester from recycled sources by 2030. Another noticeable difference in the GEL-LYTE II CM 1.95 is the tape that wraps around the shoe, providing structure and integrity to the upper with minimal material use. 100% renewable energy is used throughout the manufacturing phase.
While groundbreaking, the GEL-LYTE II CM 1.95 is only a milestone on the path of sustainability for ASICS, as the company aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. ASICS will take the findings from this shoe and apply them to future product development. The company asserts that it will continue to challenge itself, making sure it prioritizes both the quality and sustainability of its products.
The ASICS GEL-LYTE III CM 1.95 will roll out globally in Fall/Winter 2023 in stores and on the ASICS website. Stay tuned to Modern Notoriety for updates.
