While Australia is often associated with kangaroos and koalas, Aussies are also very familiar with the unmistakable sound of a kookaburra’s “laugh” that can be heard every morning at the crack of dawn. Melbourne-based retailer Up There is paying homage to this indigenous bird with a “Laughing Kookaburra” colorway of the GEL-LYTE III.
After dropping a botanical GT-II in 2022, Up There and ASICS make the switch from flora to fauna for their second collaboration. The “Laughing Kookaburra” theme was selected as it embraces the Aussie larrikin spirit.
“Representing more than just the sound of nature, it also calls to mind our penchant for a laidback lifestyle,” says Up There about the collaboration. “Aussies aren’t ones to take themselves too seriously and in a way this indigenous bird exemplifies it through its infectious laugh.”
The “Laughing Kookaburra” GEL-LYTE III comes dressed in earthy brown and off-white tones that match the bird’s plumage, even featuring the same distinctive flecks and dark brown stripes. Vibrant blue accents are found on the lateral side panels and parts of the outsole, representing the bird’s less common blue-winged species. The shoes come with matching socks and are packaged in a custom box.
