Playboi Carti fans have been waiting over a year for Narcissist to drop. The Atlanta rapper first announced its release back in August of 2021 with an Instagram post with a caption reading “NARCISSIST 09/13/21,” though no new music dropped on September 13th.
But what is Narcissist? Is it the name of Carti’s next album? Maybe. That’s been the consensus for a while, though in a XXL interview back in April, Carti announced that his next album would be called Music, “because that’s all it is at this point.”
Besides being the name of Carti’s Fall/Winter 2021 US tour, we now know for sure that Narcissist is also the name of Playboi Carti’s clothing line, which officially launched Thursday night.
Carti’s first Narcissist collection is comprised of a cropped bomber jacket in black, tank tops and sleeveless tees offered in black and in white, hoodies with mugshots screen-printed on the chest, and two hat styles, each offered in two colorways.
The mugshot photos for the hoodies were seemingly grabbed from Google image search. One features Roger Dean Whitt, who was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia in 2012 at the age of 59. Another shows the mugshot of Josue Estrada, a Boston man who referred to himself as a “ninja” and was charged with assault and battery in 2015. The third mugshot is of Nicole Marty, a Long Island woman charged with DUI and endangering the welfare of a child.
A fourth mugshot hoodie featured Hubert Leverich, a man with an accurate tattoo across his forehead that reads “Felon Thoughts Insane.” In 2012, Leverich was charged with five felonies and four misdemeanors, including sexual assault of a minor. There was some backlash from Carti fans of including a picture of a pedophile in the collection, and the hoodie was subsequently removed from the collection Friday morning.
Prior to the release, Playboi Carti shared some photos on his spam IG account which featured the likes of Yung Lean, Bladee, F1lthy, and model Mercedes Maxwell wearing pieces of Narcissist clothing, some part of this collection, others unreleased.
