Shortly after dropping a Rowley XLT collab with Vans, LA-based designer Josué Thomas and his Gallery Dept. label have now teamed up with ASICS to release a collaborative GT-2160.
The Gallery Dept. GT-2160 further explores Josué Thomas’ penchant for recontextualizing existing pieces of clothing into works of art. Each pair features a silver mesh upper with metallic blue overlays (a standard GR colorway), with a multicolored paint splatter splashed across the forefoot. Channeling the notion of individualization, the splatter pattern on each pair is unique, ensuring that no two pairs are identical.
“The inspiration for this new collaborative shoe stems from moments of reflection and mindfulness in my studio,” says Josué Thomas. “Seeing how my own ASICS shoes visually changed over time while working on art projects, I was inspired to replicate that concept of individualism as we developed this new GT-2160™.”
This GT-2160 marks Gallery Dept.’s first “official” collaboration with ASICS, though a couple of bespoke GDxASICS projects were released earlier this year. The first, a limited, hand-painted version of the GEL-LYTE V, was being sold on Gallery Dept.’s website for $600 back in March, 300% more the original retail price of the GR version. The second GDxASICS bespoke was on the “Oyster Grey” GEL-1130, which took the GR colorway and added “Dept.” stencil branding to midsoles.
Gallery Dept.’s GT-2160 was first launched at ComplexCon 2023, followed by an online release on December 8th on the Gallery Dept. website, which sold out in seconds. Luckily, there is still another chance to cop, the global release.
