Nike Air Force 1 “Smoke & Mirrors” Pack: From Memes to Reality

Next time you walk past a group of sorority girls, grab a quick look at their shoes. There’s a good chance that at least one of them will be rocking a pair of dirty white Air Force 1s that should have been retired a few dozen wears ago. Cooked AF-1s have become so ubiquitous amongst the college-aged female crowd, that memes about them have spread across the internet. There’s even an Instagram page, @smokedforces, dedicated to the trend.

The design team at .SWOOSH, Nike’s tech-inspired product division, has now taken this internet meme and turned it into an actual product. The .SWOOSH Air Force 1 “Dirty Triple White” comes pre-cooked with scuffs all over the leather upper and rubber midsole. However, this is just an upper layer that is meant to wear-away over time to reveal clean white leather underneath, essentially giving the shoe a second life.

The “Triple White” is not the only AF-1 colorway that has reached meme status. The “Triple Black” Air Force 1 also carries a notorious reputation—widely known as the shoe you wear when you’re about to get active. The “Dirty Triple White” is joined by a “Triple Triple Black” Air Force 1, taking “Black Air Force 1 energy” to the next level. This pair features a sleek, matte black finish, which wears away to reveal premium black leather underneath.

Together, both pairs are known as the “Smoke and Mirrors” pack, nodding to the deceptive nature of the wear-away layer (and a salute to @smokedforces). They each come with .SWOOSH’s signature mini Swoosh at the forefoot, .SWOOSH-branded metal lace locks, debossed Swoosh tongue tags, and custom “SWOOSH AIR” embroidery on the heels. They also come with a plastic toothbrush, which you could probably use to scrub the top layer off with some acetone.

.SWOOSH is best known for its recent run of retro video game-inspired Low Poly Air Max 1s, which included an “Adventure” colorway inspired by Tomb Raider, a “Big Head Origins” colorway paying homage to Donkey Kong, and a “Big Head Mode” Air Max 1 nodding to GoldenEye 007. This “Smoke and Mirrors” pack is actually the second internet-inspired Air Force 1 release from .SWOOSH, following the “404 Error” colorway (and the “404 Error 2.0”) inspired by the BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death).

The .SWOOSH Nike Air Force 1 “Dirty Triple White” and “Triple Triple Black” are set to drop May 7th exclusively on SNKRS in the US, each retailing for $130. Check out both colorways below.
