GANNI’s New Balance 2002Rs Feature a Y2K-Throwback Aesthetic

“GANNI girls” meets “dad shoes” as Danish fashion brand GANNI and New Balance team up for the very first time to offer two Y2K-inspired iterations of the 2002R.

These 2002Rs meet New Balance’s new green leaf standard, which means their uppers are made of 50% or more recycled content and at least one material in their sole units contains a minimum of 3% bio-based or 5% recycled content. In the case of the GANNI 2002R, the shoes feature 80% recycled content synthetic overlays, 100% recycled content mesh, 30% recycled content lace, and an outsole comprised of 5% regrind rubber.

“I am such a big fan of New Balance, I’ve been wearing them since forever,” says Ditte Reffstrup, Creative Director of GANNI. “The NB 2002R style really fits into the Copenhagen way of dressing — we’re always cycling and running somewhere. This shoe is the perfect mix of function and fashion. It’s a huge honor to put a GANNI spin on such an iconic New Balance shoe and we are super excited to be able to create it with so much innovation and recycled materials.”

GANNI’s playful and colorful Y2K-throwback aesthetic is applied to the New Balance 2002R, an update to 2010’s 2002 model that was introduced in 2020 (confused?). The GANNI 2002R arrives in a grey-based “Rainbow” colorway with a gradient sockliner and a cream-based “Island Green” colorway with green accents. Both feature GANNI-logo print panels, green outsoles, and double pull tabs on the heels.

The GANNI x New Balance 2002R is set to release on April 13th on, the New Balance website, and at select retailers worldwide.
