Joe Freshgoods Reveals New Balance 1000 Collab

Original Story (03/05/24): After dropping a love letter to the ’90s with the “1998” collection, Joe Freshgoods and New Balance are back with a new project that is all about the early ’00s.

For the eighth installment in the JFG x NB series, the Chicago-based designer is reintroducing the New Balance 1000. This mesh-based running silhouette first came on the market in 1999, but didn’t stick around too long, making them rather obscure in today’s day and age. They were originally designed as a versatile trainer that provided stability for people with mild to severe overpronated feet. Its upper features sleek wavy lines for a hip aesthetic, while ABZORB heel and forefoot cushioning provides superior comfort.

Based on the colorway names, it seems to us that these JFG x NB 1000s are inspired by getting fresh in the early ’00s. “Pink Mink” instantly reminds us of Cam’ron’s iconic 2002 Fashion Week outfit, the one where he’s decked out in pink fur with the pink flip phone to match.

Meanwhile, the black and metallic copper color scheme of the “Black Ice” colorway is reminiscent of the Air Tuned Max “Celery,” which coincidentally also first came out in 1999. However, solely based on the “Black Ice” colorway name, we think that JFG is drawing inspiration from the black ice scent used in car fresheners and colognes. Something about the iridescent sheen evokes memories of Curve cologne spray.

We also have to remember that Joe Freshgoods shared a sneak peek of the box for this release, which features airbrushed flame and dice graphics. These types of graphics are typically used on tattoos and airbrush tees. Instead of further speculating, we’ll wait for JFG to continue the rollout and provide the full story.

Both colorways of the Joe Freshgoods x New Balance 1000 are set to release this April. Grab a look below and stay tuned to Modern Notoriety for updates.
