atmos, the global sneaker boutique headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, has unveiled an exclusive “Back In Black” iteration of the New Balance 550 inspired by monochrome fashion trends.
According to the atmos, the “Back in Black” theme was chosen after reminiscing about the all-black trend in fashion that peaked around 2015. This is in contrast to today’s fashion, where there is a greater interest in Y2K style, individuality through diversity, and standing out with a mix of colors.
To help bring black back in fashion, atmos has dressed up New Balance’s 550 retro basketball silhouette in all-black with mixed material construction. Though monotone in color, the diverse blend of materials adds extra flavor to the project. Nubuck on the toe box is paired with suede side panels and leather overlays, while the tongues are made from lightweight mesh, the same kind of mesh typically used on basketball shorts. For a bit of pop, reflective 3M is used on the ankle collar, and white accents are applied to the piping, 550 branding, tongue tags, and pebbled N logos on the side panels.
