Legendary pro-skater Andrew Reynolds is gearing up for the launch of his first pro model sneaker with New Balance: the Numeric 933.
First revealed on the cover of Thrasher, the Numeric 933 draws inspiration from New Balance’s iconic 990 series, featuring an upper with similar panels as the MADE in USA 993, though adjusted for skateboarding. Thickly-padded tongues, low-profile midsoles with ABZORB cores, and grippy NDurance rubber outsoles contribute to the shoe’s skateability.
“For me, being a skater in my forties, the wrong shoes will hurt my whole body,” says Andrew Reynolds. “So, it’s very important to me that I can make something to avoid that. I want to be able to skate with youthfulness. If I take part in designing something that is going to help that, then I think, why not?”
The shoe is also filled with Easter eggs that personally tie to The Boss and his legacy. Ten notches placed around the toe on the outsole represent ten key moments in Reynolds’ life and career:
- 1978 – The year he was born
- 1987 – The year he started skating
- 1995 – The year he turned pro for Birdhouse
- 1998 – The year he won Thrasher’s ‘Skater of the Year’
- 2000 – The year he founded Baker Skateboards
- 2002 – The year he got sober
- 2005 – The year his daughter was born
- 2010 – The year his Stay Gold part was released
- 2011 – The year he met his partner
- 2022 – The year he signed with New Balance Numeric
Embossed on the heel is a small drawing of a cloud by Reynolds’ daughter, while under the insoles are the different model numbers that were considered before settling on 933. This includes 8055 (a tribute to his Boss nickname), as well as 333 and 999, a nod to his OCD-like fixation with those numbers, which he discusses in his 2007 “Madness” episode of Vice’s Epicly Later’d.
Anticipation for The Boss’ first signature NB# shoe has been high ever since he signed with the brand in 2022. The design process was a meticulous one, spanning 18 months, which Reynolds approached with the same attention to detail he applies to his video parts. To tide fans over, Reynolds and Numeric released two collaborative 480s—a “Chocolate Brown” colorway in 2023 and a “Sea Salt” colorway in 2024.
The New Balance Numeric 933 “Wheat” and “Black/Olive” launches April 25th at select skate shops, followed by a release on the New Balance website on April 28th.
