It’s hard to believe it’s been a whole decade since adidas took over the sneaker scene with the Boost wave.
It all started in 2013 when adidas introduced the Energy Boost, the first shoe to feature a new and innovative cushioning technology known as Boost that strayed from the industry standard EVA foam. This tech was praised by everyday runners as well as professional athletes for its softness, comfort, and exceptional energy return.
However, Boost hype didn’t really set in until the introduction of the Ultraboost in 2015. The shoe combined Boost cushioning with a Primeknit upper, providing unparalleled comfort not only underfoot, but around the foot as well.
Of course, you can’t talk about the rise of Boost without mentioning Kanye West. He was a big fan of the Ultraboost and would often be seen rocking the shoe on the street as well as on stage. His influence played a huge role in turning the performance runner into a coveted streetwear icon.
A lot has changed his 2015. Ultraboosts and NMDs have faded from the limelight. Kanye West is no longer Kanye West. However, there are many sneakerheads that look back at this Boost era with fondness, and fashion trends tend to by cyclical.
For the silhouette’s 10th anniversary, adidas is bringing back the Ultraboost in its iconic OG black and purple colorway, reminding fans why it was once dubbed “the greatest running shoe ever made.” Even a decade later, few shoes have matched its blend of comfort, style, and cultural influence.
