Tom Sachs Introduces the Nike Mars Yard 3.0

Following a two-year hiatus, Tom Sachs and Nike are reviving their NikeCraft partnership with the introduction of the Mars Yard 3.0.

Contemporary artist Tom Sachs is known for incorporating elements of engineering and design into his works, drawing inspiration from pop culture, technology, and the NASA space program. In 2012, Tom and Nike teamed up for the launch of the first Mars Yard shoe, celebrated for its minimalist design, high-performance features, and using actual materials from NASA’s Mars rovers.

Subsequent iterations have expanded on the original 2012 design, each sequel adding new technical features to the shoe. The Mars Yard 2.0 was released in 2017, followed by the Mars Yard Overshoe in 2018, and a wear-tester exclusive Mars Yard 2.5 in 2020. Key features on the Mars Yard 3.0 include:

  • Open mesh polyester uppers
  • Polyurethane React foam midsoles
  • TPU toe caps
  • Carbon fiber plates
  • Staggered eyestays
  • TPU heel clips

The Mars Yard 3.0 comes after a pause in the Tom Sachs x Nike partnership, following a report published by Curbed that detailed Sachs’ creation of a hostile, cult-like work environment in his studio. Since then, Sachs has affirmed his commitment to becoming a better employer, echoed by a statement released by Nike:

“Tom has demonstrated and recommitted to fostering a culture of respect and inclusivity. We can confirm that our work with Tom will continue and this next chapter of NikeCraft will uphold our shared passion for team, product, and storytelling excellence.”

The NikeCraft Mars Yard 3.0 is set to drop September 2025 on SNKRS and at select retailers. Grab a first look below and stay tuned to Modern Notoriety for updates.
