After months of speculation, Nintendo has finally revealed the successor to its popular Switch console, the Nintendo Switch 2.

Based on the first-look trailer, the Nintendo Switch 2 is a larger and more powerful version of its successor, and doesn’t stray too far from the Switch 1’s design. It is a hybrid console, playable as a handheld or docked to a TV, with detachable Joy-Con controllers. The Switch 2 is backwards compatible, able to play both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, though Nintendo says certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported or fully compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2.

Besides its larger display, the Switch 2 also features smaller bezels than the Switch 1. The Joy-Con controllers are magnetic this time around, and the rear of the console comes equipped with a full-width kickstand. We also see a USB-C port on the console’s top side.

No release date, price, or games have been announced, though the trailer does confirm that the console is releasing in 2025, and also give us a first look at a new Mario Kart game.

Nintendo is giving fans a chance to get hands-on with the Switch 2 prior to its release at events in selects cities across the globe. The Nintendo Switch 2 Experience kicks off April 4th in New York City and Paris, and will make stops in Los Angeles, Dallas, Toronto, London, Milan, Tokyo, Madrid, Amsterdam, Melbourne, Seoul, and Berlin. This tour runs until June 1st, so it is likely the console will not release until after this date.

Tickets for the Nintendo Switch 2 Experience will be made available through a free-to-enter, randomly selected drawing, with registration opening January 17th. More details can be found on the Nintendo website.
