In 2023, Nike Basketball and Vanessa Bryant introduced the Kobe “Halo” series as a way to honor Kobe’s birthday every year. Last year’s festivities came with the introduction of the Kobe 8 Protro, which is now being followed up by the return of the Kobe 9 in 2024.
The original Kobe 9 was released in 2014, an ultra-high basketball shoe that was a major departure from the low-top Kobe shoes from the years prior. Eric Avar and Bryant looked to boxing boots for design inspiration, as the aging Kobe was looking for more ankle support. The shoe was being rolled out while Kobe Bryant was recovering from surgery for his Achilles injury, so Nike added stitches to the Achilles heel of each colorway as a way to integrate that story into the design.
The Kobe 9 Elite High and its low top counterpart that also debuted in 2014 are now back in Protro form for their 10th anniversary. Each come dressed in the triple-white “Halo” colorway and come with 3D Swooshes. Just like the OGs, they feature Flyknit construction, while underfoot the original Lunarlon is replaced with Nike React foam (similar to the Kobe 8 Protro).
The Nike Kobe 9 Elite High Protro “Halo” drops on Kobe’s birthday, August 23rd, on SNKRS in select regions. The Lows will be available on September 19th. Check out official images of both pairs below.
