Nike Introduces Cryoshot: Where Soccer Heritage Meets the Streets

Nike Football has shared a first look at its latest lifestyle shoe, the Cryoshot—a design the brand describes as “where history and heritage on the pitch meets the streets.”

One iteration of the Cryoshot draws inspiration from the legendary Mercurial R9, Ronaldo’s signature boot which he famously wore during the 1998 World Cup in France.

A grail among Nike soccer cleat collectors, the original Mercurial R9 marked the debut of the Mercurial line and was praised for its cutting-edge, lightweight construction that helped players blaze across the pitch with unprecedented speed.

The Cryoshot debuts in the Mercurial R9’s original colorway, featuring a bold mix of grey, blue, and yellow on the upper. Underfoot, it incorporates cleat-like studded tooling encapsulated in a clear midsole, giving the appearance of a block of ice. The idea is that the Cryoshot represents “legacy frozen in time”—now thawed and reimagined for a new generation.

What makes the Cryoshot especially unique is its street-ready construction. While it pays homage to classic on-pitch performance, its cleated outsole is designed to be worn casually, aligning perfectly with the viral #BootsOnlySummer trend currently taking over social media.

Alongside the Mercurial R9-inspired iteration, Nike is also releasing a Cryoshot that draws inspiration from the Tiempo Legend 10R—a signature edition of the Nike Tiempo boot created for Brazilian superstar Ronaldinho, originally introduced in 2005. This version of the Cryoshot appears in the 10R’s classic white and gold colorway, famously worn by Ronaldinho in Nike’s iconic “Touch of Gold” ad, which was the first video to reach one million views on YouTube.

Nike’s reveal of the Cryoshot follows closely behind the unveiling of the adidas F50 Adiframe, which also features a similarly innovative cleated sole encapsulation.

The Nike Cryoshot is slated to launch later this summer on Nike.com and at select retailers. Grab a first look below and stay tuned to Modern Notoriety for updates.
