Marvel has just unveiled a new 2D-fighting game during PlayStation’s latest State of Play presentation.
Dubbed MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls, the new title allows you to assemble your own team of legendary Marvel characters to face off against opponents in 4v4 tag team battles. Playable characters unveiled in the announcement trailer include iconic heroes and villains such as Iron Man, Captain America, Spider-Man, Doctor Doom, Ms. Marvel, Star-Lord, Storm, and Ghost Rider.
PlayStation Studios and Marvel Games have tapped Arc System Works—the developer of the Guilty Gear series—to develop this new Marvel fighting game.
“From the beginning, we aimed to make MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls a title that could be enjoyed by a wide variety of players,” explains Game Director and Lead Battle Designer, Kazuto Sekine. ”Generally, a team VS fighting game requires the player to learn multiple characters, but for MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls, you only need to master one character in order to play the game. We have designed the mechanics in such a way that you can perform a variety of actions with either traditional fighting game inputs or simple inputs. With the press of a few buttons, multiple characters can appear on screen to provide backup or attack together – creating a new and exciting team VS battle experience.”
Marvel’s iconic characters have been reimagined with Arc’s unique twist, both in their appearance and gameplay styles.
“I remember, personally, the first time I saw Iron Man. It was really when I felt that we had something special,” says Michael Francisco, Sr. Product Development Manager at Marvel Games. “Iron Man is supposed to be this sleek fighter jet. Think luxury racecar mixed with a brick house. And the fact that they added anime mech elements to him just felt really naturally at home.”
Each character features a bespoke set of Normal, Special, and Unique attacks inspired by their abilities and powers in Marvel lore. Arc has gone to great lengths to ensure that gameplay style, movement, and feel of these legendary characters is fresh, new, and wholly unique to MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls.
