Joe Freshgoods x New Balance 990v6 “From Prom to Paris” Pack

Original Story (07/22/24): Joe Freshgoods has officially unveiled his next collaboration with New Balance.

Following the release of the JFG x New Balance 1000 “When Things Were Pure” collection earlier this year, the Chicago-based designer is back with two tonal colorways of the 990v6, one dressed in all blue and the other in all red.

The unveiling comes with a video trailer and the announcement of a JFG x NB art exhibition in Paris, titled “A Friend Named Cousin.” Artists featured in the exhibition include Jewel Ham, Teoni Hinds, Banga Minthe, Jahlil Nzinga, Rello, Goldie Williams, and JFG himself.

Like previous JFG projects, the story behind these 990v6s and the accompanying art show is rooted in the Black experience. “A Friend Named Cousin” is inspired by the idea of being family but not related by blood. It is common in the Black community to refer to each other as cousins, both IRL and online (such as in the “Girl Talk Uncensored” community on X).

The launch of this JFG x NB project coincides with the start of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. The blue and red colorways are possibly a nod to the colors of the France and USA flags. However, these colors also represent home, as the Chicago flag features the same red and light blue hues.

Grab a preview of the Joe Freshgoods x New Balance 990v6 collection below. Expect the shoes to launch at the JFG x NB art exhibition in Paris, open from July 26th to July 30th at Les Filles du Calvaire. As always, stay tuned to Modern Notoriety for updates.

Update (07/24/24): JFG has officially announced the name of each colorway: “Paris Red” and “Prom Blue.” Closer looks reveal special branding on the heels, with the JFG logo replacing the American flag and “MADE FOR US” replacing the “MADE IN U.S.A.” label.

The “From Prom to Paris” pack will launch at the “A Friend Named Cousin” art exhibition in Paris on July 27th. Stay tuned for further details.

Update (07/29/24): JFG has launched an EQL raffle on his website for both colorways of the 990v6 “From Prom to Paris” pack, as well as an accompanying short film.

The film follows a teenage romance through a cultural rite of passage and intimate conversations about self-discovery and exploration. Inspired by Joe Freshgoods’ personal experiences and passion for history and culture, the footwear for this collection pays homage to a specific time, 2005. Compelling visuals illustrate themes of love, travel, and growth alongside Black Prom’s historical genesis, the allure of escapism, and cultural relationships with color. This story takes us from the west side of Chicago to Paris, France, with love.

Raffles close on Thursday, August 1st. A wider release for the “Prom Blue” colorway is slated for August 9th at select retailers.
