Los Angeles-based streetwear brand Born X Raised presents a new “State of Grace” capsule, named after the 1990 crime drama film directed by Phil Joanou and starring Sean Penn.
According to BXR, the “State of Grace” collection is rooted in “the rituals, contradictions, and quiet absolutions that define the human experience.” Pieces in the capsule include short and long-sleeve tees, a jersey, crewneck, hoodie, sweatpants, and shorts, each adorned with Born X Raised’s signature LA-inspired branding and imagery.
Graphics specially made for this drop include a reimagined modern-day version of Our Lady of Guadalupe, a figure deeply rooted in Chicano and Latino culture associated with faith and pride in Mexican American heritage. Meanwhile, the long-sleeve tee directly ties to the State of Grace film, featuring artwork from the movie on the front, as well as references to the film’s tagline: “A family ripped apart by violence. A love corrupted by betrayal. A friendship stained by blood.”
The collection is accompanied by short film titled River’s Edge, directed by BXR co-founder Alex/2Tone, starring filmmaker Miranda July and familiar BXR collaborators. The film unfolds entirely in water, as each cast member is submerged in a baptism-like cult ritual, capturing themes of identity, transformation, and belief.

“I am the day one co-founder of BXR and have been a part of making artistic decisions for over its entire history,” says 2Tone. “I directed this piece and it’s a reference to southern non-denominational cults. There is no religious iconography in this film or in the designs. This was not intended to blaspheme or insult anyone’s religion or faith or done for shock value. I’m not qualified to have a theological debate with anyone so I’m not gonna argue. Historically, if you are familiar with our brand you are aware we have been pushing the envelope for a decade plus and this is nothing new. At the end of the day, I am one half of a team that no longer exists and I am tasked with leading our team and evolving while still maintaining reverence for our roots. Per usual we will be taking chances and swinging for the fences, same as it ever was. If none of this resonates, that’s fine, I said what I said.”
Founded in 2013, Born X Raised has grown into a pillar of LA streetwear, with a mission that runs deeper than fashion. Founders 2Tone and Spanto set out to build more than just a brand— they aimed to be a voice for those holding onto their roots as the communities around them change. Each piece is designed to resonate with those who truly understand what it means to be “born and raised” in LA.
