Jordan Brand is bringing back the OG Air Jordan 5 “Fire Red” with the black tongue as part of the AJ5’s 35th-anniversary celebration.
Originally released in 1990, the Air Jordan 5 debuted in two “Fire Red” variations—one with reflective silver tongues and the other with black tongues. While we’ve seen retro releases of the black tongue iteration in the past (once in 2006 and again in 2013), these strayed from the OG design with a Jumpman logo on the heel instead of the original Nike Air branding. The upcoming 2025 release will be the first to feature since 1990 to restore the OG “Nike Air” branding on the heels.
Like many OG Jordan colorways, the shoe comes in a Chicago Bulls-inspired color scheme comprised of white, black, and red. The white leather upper features “23” embroidery on the lateral heel, a signature detail exclusive to this version of the “Fire Red” colorway. Other elements include a red sockliner, the classic mesh netting on the side panels and tongues, a black-and-red midsole, and an icy translucent outsole.
This “Fire Red” (Black Tongue) retro marks the the third OG Air Jordan 5 colorway returning for the 35th anniversary. It follows the “Black Metallic Reimagined” in February and the upcoming “Grape” retro that is slated for April.
The 2025 Air Jordan 5 “Fire Red” (Black Tongue) is currently expected to release on September 13th via SNKRS and select retailers. Grab a first look below and stay tuned to Modern Notoriety for more.
