Original Story (07/10/24): Jordan Brand is celebrating Mexican culture and traditions with an “El Grito” edition of the Air Jordan 5.
The “El Grito” Air Jordan 5 was first spotted at the opening party of the Jordan World of Flight store in Mexico City. At more than 22,000 square feet, the three-story retail space is Nike’s largest in Latin America.
Debuted by Mexican reggaeton artist El Malilla, the Air Jordan 5 “El Grito” features a Sail leather upper with hits of green and red on the midsole, inspired by the colors of the Mexican flag. The lace toggles also come in mismatched green and red, with dark red featured on the sockliner and Jumpman on the tongue. Traditional Mexican designs are embossed on the tongue, toe cap, and heel panel.
“El Grito” (literally translated “the shout”) is a cry of Mexican pride that can be heard on the eve of Mexican Independence Day in the center of Mexico City and in various Mexican communities across the world. Large groups of people gather to celebrate on the evening of September 15th and shout El Grito in unison along with the phrase “Viva Mexico.” The word “Viva” is found on the metal lace tags of the AJ5.
The Air Jordan 5 “El Grito” drops September 5th in Mexico and on September 12th in select regions. Catch them on SNKRS and at select retailers. Grab a first look below and stay tuned to Modern Notoriety for updates.
