adidas SPZL curator Gary Aspden is back with a new collection for the Spring/Summer 2025 season.
Since 2014, the adidas SPZL line has delivered modern takes on archival silhouettes steeped in football heritage and cultural legacy. The new offering for SS25 features six footwear styles that lean into unique takes on iconic styles mixed with new hybrids, along with a full range of apparel and accessories. Let’s dive in.
First up is the TRX Mesh SPZL, a remix of the TRX running silhouette from the ’70s with mesh uppers replacing the original nylon, though keeping the OG blue and yellow color scheme. Next, the Handball Cup SPZL draws inspiration from iconic handball styles from the mid ’80s. The design uses the blue/white 1983 Handball Spezial as the foundation, while adding in a swooping leather overlay below the collar, pulled from the Handball Top.
The Failsworth SPZL, meanwhile, draws from the obscure adidas Barbados silhouette, keeping its neutral color palette while adding a T-toe overlay inspired by a pair of vintage adidas Universal SL and a chocolate brown tongue tag used on various vintage ‘Made in France’ models.
The Roelee SPZL is a new hybrid that takes the upper of the Whalley SPZL—complete with its T-toe overlay that extends to the heel—and pairs it with the textured foxing of the Gazelle SPZL. The Pampanga SPZL, named after the province in the Philippines, uses the archival Made in Philippines adidas Squire as its starting point. adidas recreated the vintage outsole of the Squire on the Pampanga SPZL, while overhauling the upper with a new pattern and tighter toebox.
The final footwear style is a new hybrid called the A. Aspden SPZL, named after and featuring the signature of Gary Aspden’s late father. Its minimalist white upper is reminiscent of the Stan Smith, while its tooling is pulled from the adidas Hawaii. The silhouette pays homage to adidas tennis styles from the ’70s, many of which used athlete signatures in their design. Gary’s father was a skilled tradesman who work as a hand engraver for 50 years, and as a result, had incredible handwriting. The inclusion of his signature honors the memory of the man who supported Gary’s endeavors throughout his lifetime.
Accompanying the footwear is an apparel collection headlined by the Halewood SPZL Parka, constructed from lightweight nylon construction and offered in two color options. The Hudswell SPZL Jacket and Shorts, meanwhile, take sporting style and reconstitute it with ripstop fabrics. Other apparel styles include the Billinge SPZL Hoodie, Brockhall SPZL Tee, Mod SPZL tee, Salesbury SPZL Trousers, and Wardour SPZL Vest.
Accessories round out the expansive offering, including the ST10 SPZL Bag (based on the iconic ST rain jackets), the complementary ST10 SPZL Hip Bag, a white Mod Trefoil SPZL Cap, and a twin pack of Mod Trefoil SPZL Socks.
The collection is brought to life with a campaign starring British actor and longtime adidas SPZL supporter James Nelson Joyce. The film is directed by Nick Griffiths and produced by &SON, while the photos were shot by heralded music photographer Kevin Cummins.
